Pioneer Florida outdoorswoman Dessie Smith Prescott, good friend of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, led a long and exciting life. The two women made a memorable trip up the St. Johns River, which Rawlings turned into a story, "Hyacinth Drift." Candace Boothe, Dessie's longtime caregiver, presented a fascinating program on December 6, 2008, at the Rawlings Farm based on the outspoken, independent Dessie she knew, a woman who earned her living as a hunting and fishing guide, served in the WACS during World War II, and earned a spot in the Florida Women's Hall of Fame. Historic photographs and memorabilia were arranged on the porch of the tenant house for the program.
